Course Description: Essentials of Firefighting is an introduction to the knowledge and skills needed by a beginning firefighter in the Snake River Valley Training Association (SRVTA). Successful completion of this two-day training course and the annual Live Fire training is required within two years of first joining any SRVTA fire agency.

The course will involve the following topics:

Saturday

• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
• Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and Search and Rescue (SAR)
• Fire Behavior
• Safety, Incident Command System (ICS), and Accountability

Sunday

• Hoses, Fire Streams, and Fire Attack
• Ropes and Knots and Small Tools
• Ventilation and Ladders
• Salvage and Overhaul

PRE-REQUISITES:

• Coat and pants, boots, gloves and hood (NFPA 1971 compliant)
• Positive-pressure SCBA (NFPA/MSHA/NIOSH compliant)
• Air-tight seal with face mask

Facial hair will not be allowed in the sealing area of the face mask. Participants who cannot attain an air-tight seal with their face mask, or who are not in compliance with NFPA, NIOSH and MSHA will not be given a certificate of completion.
